Softoy Hobby sofubi factory visit…

I was extremely honoured to get a chance to visit the factory I’ll be getting the Sumoggubōru produced at earlier this week, with friend and master-caster Cory of Science Patrol on-hand to show us the steps involved and, of course, help me pull my very own marbled Oozeballs- one of which will be offered up via IG comp very soon! For those that are interested, I’ve recorded the casting process in just 5 (not so easy!) steps which can be found on the new Softoy Hobby You Tube Channel right here

[From top left] 1. To start, the vinyl is vacuumed to get rid of as many bubbles as possible, 2. The vinyl is then poured directly into mold, filling up to the top of the joints, 3. The mould is submerged in cooking chemicals for a certain amount of time depending on the vinyl thickness required, 4. Excess is poured out and the mold is cooked again, 5. The mold is submerged into cold water to cool down, 6 and 7. The mold is mounted on a base and the casting is cut and pulled free, 8. In some cases a centre spinning machine is employed earlier on in the casting process to again reduce bubbles, 9. Mold storage at the factory!

The Rampage Studios Finale in pictures…

img_9847

After 4 years of some of the most talked about shows in the indie sofubi scene, Rampage Studios opened it’s doors to the public one last time for its Finale show last Friday. A rather fitting final bow from owner Jon Malmsedt of Rampage Toys, the compact exhibition featured a slew of RT originals, paint runs and one-offs, including collaborations with past Rampage Studios participants, including Paul Kaiju, Splurrt, MVH, Grumble Toy and myself (Tru:Tek). A hugely entertaining night for all involved, the beer flowed, toys were bought and fans and artists alike were able to reflect on what has been an amazing  4 years for the studio… Below is a small visual roun up of the many, many figures Jon prepared for the show. If you’re interested in checking out a walkthrough, then be sure to head to the new Softoy Hobby You Tube channel here for a (slightly shaky!) walkthrough I recorded before the shows opening… Enjoy!

Softoy Sofubi Insight: Part 2…

Processed with Snapseed.

So now that we’ve seen the iron molds in all their glory, next up is showing you guys the first process involved in getting there- making the wax casts! Using very similar techniques seen in resin and keshi casting, the sculpt is first molded in a silicone rubber with a few subtle differences, namely employing a huge pour spout to avoid any nasty bubbles without the aid of a pressure pot. Once this has been finalised, the wax is then poured, left to set and then pulled for a lengthy course of cleaning, re-sculpting and polishing- an extremely time consuming process that I’ve been attempting to get the hang of with the Sumoggubōru over the past couple of days! Next up, taking the wax to the factory for jointing…
