MAN-E-NEWS// The Pandeer resin figure from Welkid x My Royal Ego…

Welkid has just revealed his latest project with ‘Lord on Board’ creator, My Royal Ego, the Pandeer resin figure. As the name would suggest, the 9″ tall beast takes its aesthetic from both the panda and deer- resulting in a beautiful character whose balance of curves and blocked shapes is reminiscent of a humanoid take on Touma. Priced at $160 plus shipping, the Pandeer is limited to just 20 pieces, so be sure to track My Royal Ego down here to secure yours…

MAN-E-NEWS// The ‘Double Trouble’ Zagarad from Le Merde x Gargamel x Super7…

Super7 have just revealed details of their latest release, the Le Merde x Gargamel “Double Trouble” Zagarad. Available tomorrow (March 1st) at Noon PST from the Super7 store, Double Trouble Zagarad can be yours for just $35 plus shipping…

MAN-E-NEWS// The bronze ‘Jack’ sculpture from Luke Chueh x Fully Visual…

March 7th will see the super-limited release of Luke Chueh‘s latest collaboration with Fully Visual, the bronze “Jack” sculpture. Inspired by Chueh’s “Jacked” painting (pictured) and the mythological “Jackalope”, the sculpture successfully blends the artists character design with the classic taxidermic presentation of the Jackalope, stuffed and mounted on a plaque.

Limited to an edition of just 7 (coinciding with the release date, which also happens to be Chueh’s birthday), information with regards to pricing and availability on the pieces is still forthcoming, so be sure to keep checking the Fully Visual site for further updates over the coming days…

This photo features wax versions of the sculpture. These sculpts will be used to form the plaster molds from which the bonze will be cast. Each bonze requires its own mold and its own wax “positive”. This process is very time consuming and requires the hands of an artisan. This is why we’ve decided to limit this bronze to seven pieces (and it compliments the March 7th release date, which also happens to be my birthday).- Luke Chueh

MAN-E-NEWS// New teaser of the Micro-BUDS from Ferg…

Since the reveal of Ferg‘s micro flame-head BUD last month, news on the much requested mini-figure had gone quiet- that was until an unassuming photo ended up on Instagram last week…

Featuring the micro-BUD in both bomb and flame form, the Scott Wilkowski (interviewed here) sculpted figure appears to have already entered production. Information on release dates, availability, and even material choice are still scarce (will this be yet another limited resin run?), but we’ll bring you all the news as soon as it hits…

MAN-E-NEWS// Erick Scarecrow’s Wet-Suit Maria GID edition from ESC Toy…

MAN-E-NEWS// The ‘Tolly’ Cavey from A Little Stranger x Scott Tolleson…

MAN-E-FEATURE// OMFG! Series 2 submissions…

With the closing date for OMFG Series 2 submissions looming (entries must be posted in the October Toys forum by February 29th), we’ve decided to give a quick run-down of some of the best entries we’ve seen so far. Competition has been fierce this time around, with the dedicated thread now holding well over 8 months and 140 pages of ideas, concepts, and wip sculpts. The final submissions will be collated on October Toys’ site, and will be ready for voting at the end of the week. Stay tuned for more information in the next few days…

[Monkey King’s Scorpion Girl]

“Probably the last sketch I’ll do for Scorpion GIrl, Barbella. Was trying to give her a mini figure feel, hope you guys like it…”

[Delko’s GameBro]

“I gave him a face grid, looks kinda meh unpainted but… you can actually get some nice expression going on with just a 10×10 box.”

[Natron’s Nipplor and Cuddlefish]

First off, Nipplor—a muscley guy covered in nipples. I imagined rubber nipples, but I think flesh nipples might be more disturbing. Pictured is a draft sculpt of Nipplor, along with the Cuddlefish (thanks for the encouragement, T16skyhopp!). I haven’t done the Cuddlefish’s eyes yet, but I like how her back pattern turned out. I also need to redo her arms so she can stand properly. Nipplor is about half an inch too short, so I’ll have to redo him (and I hadn’t done arms or any detail yet).

[Jimmy Foo’s Tongue/Vomit (?!) entry]

“For want of a better name this lil fella is Lick-Or…….”

[Très’ MOTU themed Robot Meteor and Okt ver4]

[Monster Forge’s Elder and Alien Bob]

Been working on a couple of ideas here and there as I’ve had time… these are still rough… need to clean them up and sand them a bit to make ’em smoooooooooove. The alien guy is Bob. The crab guy is The Elder…

Talking of his Elder entry-The similarity to the Crayboth is totally unintentional, but I kinda like that it works that way… maybe a subspecies of Crayboth that lives in the ocean. I was going for a Lovecraftian horror meets the Garthim of The Dark Crystal type of critter.

[We Become Monsters’ as yet unnamed entry]

[Ironmask’s  the colossus of rictus row, Deadface, and a new unnamed freestyle sculpt]

[RedJaroJam’s entry, The Living Candle]

[RuFuS’ B.A.B.E.E. entry]

“Stands for Bionic. Atomic. Bionic. Earth. Enforcer…”

[oOMoSOo’s Skeleton Viking]

Okay well I’m starting the sculpt now it will be a slightly different design to make it more fitting style wise instead of so sharp. Seeing as he was the most popular of my designs for N.E.C.R.O I decided to submit the Viking looking dude.

[Eric Nilla’s Rock Ogre and Pet Robot entries]

[Scott Tolleson’s ‘Missing’ Milk Carton entry]

[Turbopistola’s Cuddlehard]

Turbopistola previewed an entry for the new series last month with his take on the logos huge lipped design (pictured), but on reading his latest posts, we expect the figure to differ wildly once it’s revealed tomorrow- take a look…

MAN-E-NEWS// The MAN-E-TOYS custom Pembelton Stranglefoot from UME Toys…

As featured here last Thursday, Rich over at UME Toys has decided to shun a general release for his long awaited Pembelton Stranglefoot figure in favour of a much more personal route- offering up one-of-a-kind customs to anyone looking to take the plunge in purchasing the beautiful resin toy. We wasted no time in requesting ours, giving Rich the colour palette of our site’s name-sake, MOTU’s Man-E-Faces, to play with…

Yesterday Rich sent over some images of the finished custom, and as you can see here, he’s done an absolutely sterling job. We never imagined that he’d take the design so far (especially in such a small time frame), but the He-Man wrestling ‘Pembelton Stranglehold’ offers the perfect tribute to the MOTU character, without interfering with the beauty of Strangefoot’s sculpt.

Anyone interested in grabbing there own custom Pembelton should e-mail Rich directly ASAP, this little guy won’t last for long!

Pembelton is priced at £50 including shipping…

MAN-E-NEWS// Motorbot’s ‘Squonk’ resin figure out today (plus Robot 13 update)…

Featured here as a work in progress a few weeks back, Motorbot‘s latest resin creature, the Squonk, is set to drop some time today in the Deadbear Studios store. Limited to an initial batch of around 10, Motorbot has revealed several different shimmering colourways so far, including ‘slime’ green, root beer, ocean water, sparkling cream soda, and people eater purple. No news yet with regards to exact numbers or pricing on the hand sculpt and cast figures, so be sure to hover around the Deadbear site later on tonight to be in with a chance of securing yours…

We covered Blacklist Studios recent Robot 13 Kickstarter project, including the Motorbot mini-figure collaboration here last week, so we thought we’d share with you the latest image of his keshi scaled Robot 13 sculpt (below). Standing at just 2″ tall, this has to be one of Motorbot’s most detailed sculpts yet- we’re just keeping our fingers crossed that the team hit their pledge target so that this little guy, along with 5 others, can be produced in full resin glory. For more information on the project, check out the Blacklist Studios Kickstarter page here.

MAN-E-NEWS// Brutherford Industries’ ‘Snack-Size’ Ice Scream Man revealed…

Ever since the release of Brutherford Industries‘ Ice Scream Man a couple of weeks back, popularity for the figure has gone through the roof (with some finding homes as far out as Russia!), so it came with great pleasure this weekend to find out that Bryan is already hard at work on his next project- the ‘Snack-Sized’ Ice Scream Man!

Pictured here in both strawberry and pistachio flavours, there has been no news on pricing, availability, or even material choice for the 2″ mini-figure (could this be a limited resin run?), but we’ll bring you more news as soon as it hits…

Bryan has also recently posted a tantalising image of what the Brutherford Industries logo might look like as a vinyl toy. Here’s hoping that this project isn’t too far down the line- a clockwork skull in the Ice Scream Man style would definitely rank at the top of my list of ‘must-haves’!

MAN-E-NEWS// Frank Kozik’s Gipper Reagan bust: Rotofugi and Munky King editions out now…

Revealed last week in the 3D Retro gold colourway, Frank Kozik‘s long awaited ‘Gipper Reagan’ bust is now available in another 2 editions- Rotofugi red/black and Munky King copper. Both limited to just 50 pieces, the 18″ tall vinyl figures come with removable ‘Destroy’ plaques and are available exclusively through their respective stores for just $200 each plus shipping…

MAN-E-FEATURE// Exclusive interview with Galaxxor creator Ben Spencer…

Now in it’s ninth edition, Ben Spencer’s Galaxxor: Monster Hunter Robo figure has swiftly become one of the most sought after designer toys in the industry. Heavily influenced by the hunched 5.5″ action figures of the 70’s and 80’s, the series has gained a reputation through Ben’s instantly recognisable sculpt, a seemingly endless supply of new colourways, and of course, the experimental talents of resin genius, The GodBeast, who has been on hand to prototype and cast the line from day dot.

We were lucky enough to get some time with Ben ahead of his upcoming appearance at April’s C2E2 to discuss his influences, the future for Galaxxor, and what attendees to the Chicago event can expect from the world of Monster Hunter Robo…

How did you stumble upon the art toy scene? Were you a collector before you started work on the Galaxxor project?

I guess the first time I realized that there was an art toy scene was when I popped in to a shop here in Chicago called Rotofugi. Little did I know at the time that it was one of the coolest and most comprehensive stores in the world for designer toys and kaiju. I was really blown away by the sheer scope of these amazing little art pieces and the reverence with which the design thought that gone into them was handled.
At this time, I had already been collecting Masters of the Universe figures for probably 10-15 years, and the way that the art toy scene approached aesthetics and design really fell in line, philosophically, with how I saw my MOTU figures.

(Galaxxor prototypes)

Galaxxor pays a loving tribute to the action figures of the 70s and 80s, what particular toys/cartoons/tv shows inspired it’s design?

Well, there’s the obvious vintage MOTU influence. For some reason, that squat, hunched 5 1/2″ figure shape just particularly speaks to me, as a platform for design.

Beyond that, cartoons like Thundercats and Silverhawks, Tokusatsu shows of the 70’s and 80’s, the aesthetic of the Mega Man games, everything Jack Kirby ever did, and Warhammer 40,00 also inform my approach to Galaxxor.

Honestly, if I had to point to just a single toy line that I aspire to emulate in my approach to toy design, it would probably be the Warrior Beasts line from Remco. Warrior Beasts was this great MOTU-sized knockoff line from the 80’s that featured monster and dinosaur heads and these ridiculously over the top brilliantly psychedelic colorways. I aspire to make something as outrageously engaging as that.

(Galaxxor ‘Gutsman’ Megaman custom)

Galaxxor signified your first foray into the world of toy sculpting, can you explain a little about the process? What materials/techniques have worked best for you?

I should probably start by pointing out that I have been friends with guys like The Godbeast and Giant Japanese Monster, Bad! for years. So, the idea of a person creating their own figures in resin was always around. Additionally, the more I did with my Nerd City blog and podcast, the more my friends became people who were making their own comics, toys, beer, video games, or whatever. So it really just inspired me to get off of my butt and have a go at it.

In a sense, I’m a terrible sculptor and have zero traditional sculpting skills. I probably worked on that Galaxxor sculpture for well over a year. In terms of materials, I used an Aves two part epoxy and built over a vintage Zodac figure. Technique-wise, I tend to build up the area that I want to sculpt and then sand and sand and sand, until I reach the desired shape. It’s a long, painful and often boring process, but I feel like it somehow results in something incredibly soulful. Which is cool.

Again, I have to give so much credit to my talented friends. Galaxxor would be one sculpture sitting on my shelf if it weren’t for Marty “The Godbeast” Hansen. He does all of the molding and resin casting of my figures. He’s the best in the biz and he really makes the Galaxxor figures look the best that they possibly can.

Depending upon the desired final result, I then hand paint the resin figures that I get back from Marty, typically using acrylics.

(Galaxxor prototypes)

The recent Galaxxor 009, as with 005 and 006, comes in a unique bb filled clear resin that has made him one of the most sought after figures in the scene. How did the idea come about?

The original idea is a combination of a couple of things. I was trying to figure out a way to save on my cost, materials-wise, to bring the final price point down, a bit. Additionally, I always dug those RealxHead figures that people had that were bb-filled clear vinyl. So, the idea just came to me to have a figure comprised of bb’s suspended in crystal clear resin. Again, The Godbeast is the master, so presenting him with a challenge like this wasn’t a concern at all. The 005 and 006’s were huge successes, and sold out immediately. So it was pretty clear that people liked the bb/resin combo.

The 009 started out as something that I just had Marty make for me for my personal collection. Those chromed bb’s cost an arm and a leg, so creating a Galaxxor with them was actually more expensive that just a standard resin figure. But, when I got that figure in my hands, I knew that it was too cool to not offer the Galaxxor fans a chance to get their hands on one. I offered up 5 pre sale slots for the 009 and they sold out pretty much immediately, as well.

(Galaxxor 009)

The Galaxxor story is well documented on the series’ header cards, but can you explain a little bit about the universe for the uninitiated?

The short version of the Galaxxor story is that he was this sort of robo savior superhero bestowed upon humanity by these Kirby-esque Seven Space Gods to protect them and maintain order. He had all of the cliche super powers, such as flight, super strength and super speed. He also had the ability to regenerate and heal his wounds, using the power of the environment around him.

After the original Galaxxor had established order throughout the universe, humanity entered a golden age of technology and progress. General Gorgax and The Evil Mutant Legion began challenging humanity’s grip on the universe and knew that the only way to achieve this was to eliminate Galaxxor. Gorgax created The Ultimate Nullifier Cannon, which he used to shatter Galaxxor into a thousand shards that scattered to every corner of the universe.

Eventually, each of these shards regenerated into a Galaxxor (thus the 001, 002, 003 etc. …). The idea is that there are 1,000 different Galaxxors and that anyone can create their own unique version of him.

(Galaxxor header art)

Your taking part in this year’s C2E2 expo, what can attendees expect? You previewed the General Gorgax resin heads on your blog a while back, will Galaxxor’s sworn enemy finally be making an appearance?

Nerd City will have a booth (and a party!) at C2E2 this year, and I will have 5 different versions of my Cyborg Space Barbarian figures available for the first time at the con. These figures will consist of the already shown Cyborg Space Barbarian helmets (designed and sculpted by me, cast in resin by The Godbeast) attached to disused vintage MOTU bodies that I’ve found at thrift stores, flea markets and that sort of thing, painted up in funky glitter and neon paints. These are the elite henchmen of General Gorgax and will be available at Nerd City’s booth for $40 each. If I have any leftovers, they will be available on the Galaxxor site after the con.

The Gorgax figure will make his debut at C2E2 as well, but will not be for sale. As the ultimate big bad from the Galaxxor story and probably the final figure to use the original resin Galaxxor body for the immediate future (he will be a unique combo of the Galaxxor body and the Space Barbarian helmet), I want to make him available on the site, so that all of the fans can get their hands on him. Like I said, though, I do plan to at least have the General Gorgax prototype on display at C2E2.

(Cyborg Space Barbarian, General Gorgax)

What can we expect from Galaxxor in the future? You’ve mentioned the possibility of blank Galaxxors for the custom community, will these see the light of day?

The primary goal right now is to get Galaxxor into vinyl production. I’m extremely lucky to have such helpful and talented friends, and one such friend is currently lending me a hand with getting the Galaxxor design cleaned up and optimized for vinyl toy form. Most likely, this will be the way that people will be able to get their hands on more affordable, DIY Galaxxors.

I also intend to produce the occasional run of Cyborg Space Barbarian, as well as my Xenotron resin figure, which I’ve been sculpting for the last year or so.

Any final words?

Just that I’m endlessly flattered by how well Galaxxor has been received. Making these toys is one of the coolest, most enjoyable things that I’ve ever done and it makes me really really happy to know that so many other people are having fun with them as well.

We’d like to give a massive thank you to Ben for sparing the time from his busy schedule! Anyone interested in finding out more about the Galaxxor universe should head over to Ben’s blog and shop for regular updates…

MAN-E-NEWS// 3AVOX: March releases from threeA Toys…

Making up for the lack of appearance last week, today’s 3AVOX came packed with information regarding the latest threeA releases, including the long awaited MGS Rex’s confirmed release date and pricing. Here’s a quick rundown of what’s been revealed…

First up, threeA have officially announced a March release for their first 2000 AD collaboration, the 1/6th scale RO-JAWS. No news yet with regards to pricing or editions, but stay tuned in the coming weeks for more info on what has got to be one of A.B.C Warriors hottest figures yet.

MAN-E-NEWS// The Uglier Unicorn from Rampage Toys x Splurrt and more…

Joe Merril aka Splurrt is readying his latest collaboration with Rampage Toys, the Uglier Unicorns, set to drop this Sunday (26th February) at 1pm EST, exclusively on the Splurrt Big Cartel. No news yet with regards to edition size (we’re guessing around 10) or pricing, but we can confirm that each Ugly Unicorn custom will come with it’s own one-of-a-kind sculpted detailing, including eye, mouth and hair mods using magic sculpt. Produced in black vinyl, and sprayed with blue, pink, and white sprays in Splurrt’s trademark old school style, these figures are going to fly, so be sure to head over to the store pronto to secure yours…

UPDATE// Splurrt has informed us that the Uglier Unicorns will be retailing at $50 each, and have been limited to an edition of just 9.

Jon over at Rampage Toys will also be resuming his usual bombardment of Friday releases as from next week, with a whole host of brightly coloured sofubi creatures, including the pictured Daydreamer Zou-chan, making an appearance in his store soon. More news next week…

MAN-E-FEATURE// The Glyos creations of Marty “GodBeast” Hansen…

(Wolf various Glyos customs / original Armorvor Wolf prototype, cast by TGB)

Being relative newcomers to the Glyos universe, we had only really known of Marty “Godbeast” Hansen from his prototyping/casting work on Ben Spencer’s Galaxxor series- that was until we happened upon his blog this week…

Skimming through the hundreds of beautifully sculpt and cast Glyos original figures and customs, it was easy to see how the “GodBeast” name has stuck- the quantity and quality of his work is quite simply inhuman! Marty posted a few pics of his latest Glyos heads yesterday, so we thought we’d give you a rundown of a few that caught our eye…

Originally created for The GodBeast x Onell Design ‘Armorvor’ earlier this year (sculpted by Jason Frailey and designed by Onell‘s Matt Doughty), Marty has once again been working with the ‘Infection’ Fly head, this time affixed to Pheyden Glyos bodies. We’ve fallen in love with the Rothan figure- the bright green really helps to make the sculpt’s detail pop!

After the popularity of ‘Infection’ Fly, Marty was asked by a collector to sculpt a cobra head for the same Armorvor figure. The latest incarnations feature some pretty impressive paintwork, our favourite being the gold Exellis Glyos to the right… WANT!!

Sculpted by Marty’s son MJ, Mammoth Monster was first released last year at C2E2 as a roto-cast figure limited to just 12 pieces. The latest incarnation, pictured a-top of a Gatekeeper Vanin Sarvos, Core Phanost, and Nebula Pheyden, leaves us with no doubt that MJ will be following in his dad’s resin soaked footsteps. The detail on these guys is truly amazing, whilst the wild fade sprays and glass eyes translate perfectly onto the various Glyos designs- definitely one to watch…

Head over to the GodBeast site and blog for more info on Marty’s work.

Stay tuned for an exclusive interview with the other half of Galaxxor, Ben Spencer, right here tomorrow!
