UPDATED// W.I.P Keyth resin toy from Tesselate…

Hot off of the back of his first toy release of 2012 (the latest batch of Keyeyes Yo, pictured below), UK based artist Tesselate has just revealed some work-in-progress shots of his latest resin creation, entitled Keyth. Expanding on his signature keyboard theme, Tesselate is currently in the process of refining the sculpt, so information on edition size, colourways, and pricing is still being kept under wraps.

We’ll keep you up to date on any further developments, but head over to Tesselate’s Flickr/site for more photos/videos/information on the project.

Dropping last Friday (January 13th) on Tesselate’s shop here, the new batch of Keyeyes Yo are still available to purchase at £9/$14 each plus shipping.

UPDATE! Pressbots are coming…

Yesterday also saw the announcement of Tesselate’s latest resin mini-figure, the Pressbot. No news as to pricing or edition size (we’re guessing it’s just the six pictured below), but the have been confirmed with a release date of “sometime this week”.

Shaun of the Dead Lego concept by Yatkuu on Cuusoo…

Idea Image

If we hole up, I wanna be somewhere familiar, I wanna know where the exits are, and I wanna be allowed to smoke! -Shaun

Whilst sifting through the many brilliant Lego concepts on Cuusoo, we stumbled upon the latest project by Yatkuu- a startlingly accurate diorama of the Winchester pub from Shaun of the Dead!

Idea Image

Intended to sit alongside Lego’s recent Modular Houses series, the set features a full cast of characters (including zombie clown!), many of which have been custom created by the guys over at BrickArms. Anyone interested in seeing this project realised should head over to Cuusoo now to place a vote- 10,000 are needed for a set to go under review by Lego.

New Glyos “Buildstation” style vinyl Blocks from Onell Design…

Widely recognised as the most versatile platform for art toy customisation, the extensive Glyos universe from Onell Designs is gearing up for its latest addition, the “Buildstation” inspired vinyl Block. Seemingly mundane to anyone outside the custom scene, the Block has been created for a wide variety of applications, including set/prop creation, character modification, and vehicle creation.

Set to drop next Friday (January 20th), the Block will initially come in painted (for the collectors) and unpainted form. Prices and full assortment are still to be confirmed, but check Onell’s blog here in the coming days for more details.

I personally hope you guys get a kick out of this strange new addition to the Glyos ranks. There is something about holding one of these things that brings back a flood of memories for me. From playing near the ocean with the rocks, to customizing Star Wars Mini Rigs, to flying around Micronauts capsules and even overloading the old M.U.S.C.L.E. plastic trash can with piles of tiny Godzilla figures.

The idea of chopping these up to customize might be a horror to some of you, so all black “Buildstation” style vinyl Blocks and parts will be online when these fully painted versions go live next week.

This is still an experiment, so we did not produce a ton of these. If the response is good, then we’ll make more for the next drop (sometime in late March). There will be a run of matching Rigs and Rig Runners (Glyan WARP Bikes) available in this wave as well, for those of you still wondering about what the hell the Block is and what it does. Ha! -Glyos press

Anyone interested in grabbing a part of Kaiju’s latest stash are going to need to set aside Saturday for sniping his store– these pieces are going to vanish quick!

Clear 481 “Anomaly” 6-packs and more from NiStuff…

The “Ice Scream Man” by Brutherford Industries…

Ryan over at Brutherford Industries has been gearing up for the release of the company’s first art toy, the Ice Scream Man. The self-designed and manufactured ice cream skull will initially come in four different colourways; Strawberry, Mint and Chocolate, limited to 125 pieces and retailing for around $75, with the open edition Vanilla set for a price tag of around $50. Ryan has hinted that select retailers will be getting their own colours/cone variations, but definite release dates are still forthcoming.

Check the Brutherford Industries blog here for further information…

With an extensive background in manufacturing and design, Ryan set up Brutherford Industries to produce small runs of his own designs- sculpting, molding, and casting everything himself.

Ryan explains-

After many years of working in design and manufacturing it is clear that i am most comfortable in the areas where the two overlap. Outside of my full time job, (which i am still devoted to in both spirit and hourly commitments) i have continually been working on my own personal designs AND collecting outdated, abandoned and misunderstood tools and machinery.

It only makes sense that i now return that machinery to its intended life and use it to mass produce my own goods. I am going to focus on low volume limited runs of fun  objects that make people smile, some will be my own original designs some will be from the fantastic network of artists and designers that i have met over the past 12 years. It’s also possible that there are great collaborations ahead with artists i havn’t met yet. I’m not really sure how to identify what will be the unifying theme of this project but the simplest explanation is that it will be a collection of goods curated and manufactured by Tamara and I.

We have more toy designs up our sleeves as well as some proper functional items. We will not be limited to plastic goods we have projects lined up in glass, ceramic, metal, wood and various soft goods. Join the mailing list, stay tuned, and get ready for the fun. -Ryan AKA Brutherford

Cast in see-through wine-red resin, the turtle’s familiar alien baby has been replaced with a customisable love heart chest- with the choice of either a letter from A~Z, a number from 0~9 , the shape of a heart , or the ? symbol hand painted by Peter himself.

And here is Turtle Tetsujin. Inspired by Gigantor, Hanna Barbara’s Frankenstein Jr comes my Big Turtle Mekka. He was built in a time of war to protect our world now from the alien invaders! He is incredibly strong , has numerous defensive capabilities & is loved by kids around the world.

A close up of his torso plate reveals the hidden secret to his awesomeness. There sleeping ever so peacefully is the alien baby known as ” Little Pea “.  Some thought LP was either the controller or the power supply for the metal warrior. It turns out that this forever dreaming baby is the ” heart & conscience ” of Turtle Tetsujin.

This is why Turtle Tetsujin can never fail. He will never lose, he will not let any harm come to LP. You must go through him & he will never allow that to happen.

Exclusive// Interview with toy creator/customiser Motorbot

Originally cutting his teeth in the art toy scene through his infamous array of custom Munnys and MadLs on the KR forums, the legendary Motorbot has since gone on to become one of the most respected artists in the underground toy movement today. The last few years have seen him develop skills as a toy designer/creator alongside his stellar custom work, resulting in several successful, completely self made resin toy lines, including the instantly recognisable Tiny Teeth mini blind bagged series, their bigger brother Treature Erectus, and the “They Live” inspired Astro Zombies.

We were lucky enough to grab some time away from the work bench with the man himself, to discuss future plans, the current state of the art toy scene, and of course, those notorious teeth…

(Various Motorbot customs, available to purchase through the Deadbear store here)

What first got you into the art toy scene and toys in general? Do you have any fond memories of a particular toy when you were growing up?

I just stumbled into the toy scene. I was a lurker on the kidrobot message boards back in ’05 and decided to try customizing a toy. After my second or third toy, people were asking to buy them and were commissioning me to customize other toys. It snowballed from there.

I was a Transformers and He-Man nerd growing up. I think my Optimus Prime was probably my favorite toy growing up.

(Motorbot/Deadbear Studios’ first release, the Maw)

You have been cited by many as their inspiration for getting into the “indie” art toy scene, but who or what influences you? Are there any artists in or outside toys that have helped inspire your work?

Inspiring people to get into toys is honestly one of the biggest compliments I could receive. It’s easy to feel like no one is interested in what you do, but to know that your art makes others want to create provides a deep level of satisfaction. As for my influences, I’ve realized lately that the people who first inspired me to start drawing are the ones that come through in my work. Sam Keith was my idol back during the days of the Maxx, and I can see a lot of his influence in the things I make.

I do have some artist friends that inspire me. Johnnycrap is so prolific I’ve been inspired to start drawing regularly again. I have no aspirations to draw on his level but seeing him constantly working on things pushes me to draw. Luke from Lulubell keeps me working too. He is a machine cranking out vinyl and I feel bad taking a night off knowing he’s pouring vinyl somewhere.

(Tiny Teeth by Motorbot/Deadbear Studios)

Your “tiny teeth” range of toys, including the treature, hunch, goober and erectus figures have become one of your most recognizable lines. How did the teeth idea come about?

About 4 years ago I came up with the concept of the Maw. It was just an idea I had that involved this creature that was all fur an teeth. I can’t really remember what sparked it, but that was the first time I messed around with making teeth. I explored the concept over several platforms and eventually it kind of morphed into the tiny teeth series. The teeth remained from the maw but the fur became weird wrinkly skin. I can already see the whole theme moving forward with some of the pieces I’m working on right now. I’m incorporating multiple mouths on each creature and it’s getting interesting.

(Various chase figures from Motorbot’s Tiny Teeth range)

Since the bottom of the industry fell out a few years ago, more designers/sculptors have been casting and releasing work independently. How do you see the future panning out? Do you think we’ll ever see the huge production houses rise again, or is the more personal nature of handmade, strictly limited art toys a healthier option for the ultimately niche industry?

I think the smaller run handmade stuff will continue to grow. It won’t surpass the factory made stuff but it will hold its own. It feels a lot like the early days of the vinyl scene. There are so many artists discovering that they can make things on their own terms. They can take risks that big companies never will. For under $100 you can sculpt and cast your own figure, and if you sell a handful you make up your costs. Every figure won’t be a success, but they don’t all have to be.

The big companies may see a rise but I don’t think it will be anytime soon. People don’t have the cash to  constantly buy new releases. Even though the scene has rebounded it’s still far from where it was 5 years ago. People aren’t as willing to part with their money. In the end I think the rise of the handmade scene will benefit the larger companies because they’ll have a crop of artists with followings that they can work with.

(Treature Erectus by Motorbot/Deadbear Studios)

What plans do you have for the future? Are you working on any new lines, or will you be developing your current ones further? Any more customs in the pipeline?

I plan on continuing with the current line of figures. I like the direction it’s moving in. I do plan on doing more customs too. They are a nice break from making original stuff. They kind of cleanse the pallet and help move my ideas along. I have a solo show in early 2013 that I’ll start working on soon. I want to have somewhere between 30 and 40 pieces ready for it.

(Astro/They Live Zombies by Motorbot/Deadbear Studios)

We’d like to give a massive thanks to Motorbot for taking the time out to speak to us, please check out his store for regular updates, limited seasonal runs, and some of the best custom commissions in the industry…
